Frozen iPhone? How to Restart It Safely
If your iPhone screen is frozen, black or unresponsive, a force restart is usually the safest first step. If it keeps happening, the cause may be software, battery, charging, display or hardware-related.
Force restart steps for newer iPhones
For iPhone 8 or later, including Face ID models, Apple’s force restart steps are quick and do not erase data.
Press Volume Up
Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
Press Volume Down
Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
Hold Side Button
Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears, then release.
Be patient
Keep holding until the Apple logo appears; it may take longer than a normal restart.
Force restart steps for older iPhones
Older iPhones use different button combinations.
iPhone 7 / 7 Plus
Hold the side button and Volume Down button until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 6s or earlier
Hold the Home button and the side/top button until the Apple logo appears.
Charge first if needed
If the battery is empty, charge before troubleshooting further.
Do not keep pressing randomly
Repeated random button presses do not fix hardware faults and can make diagnosis confusing.
If the iPhone still won’t respond
If force restart fails, the issue may be battery, charging port, display, software, button or board-related.
Charge for 30 minutes
Use a known-good cable and adapter, then try again.
Check cable and port
Look for lint or damage, but do not scrape aggressively.
Black screen vs dead phone
A phone may be on with a failed display, or dead from power/board issues.
